Noble Apple

Surely the apple is the noblest of fruits.

Folded Star

My favorite bike ride is an eight mile trek from my childhood home in Bloomington, Indiana, up Old State Road 37 to Musgrave Apple Orchard. I met Mr. Catered Crop on one of those rides. That’s another story – but a possible explanation for my infatuation with this new Red Delicious Die-namic being released by My Favorite Things on April 9.

You might want to get comfortable – I have a lot to show you.

For this first card I filled the negative space created by the Red Delicious die with a homespun Folded Star.

The Folded or Somerset Star is a technique we did in the 70s and 80s to use up our fabric scraps. I thought it was a great way to pay tribute to the star inside the apple when you cut it side to side instead of top to bottom.

Folded Star in an Embroidery Hoop

It was so fun and nostalgic to create the Folded Star for the card, I made a larger one for the wall. I embellished it with tags using the Traditional Tags STAX Die-namics, leaves from the new Red Delicious Die-namic, the tag included in the new Blueprints 2 Die-namic set, and sentiments from Lisa Johnson Designs newest set, Sweet Roses.

Are you getting a craving for caramel apples yet?

Well, there’s more.

I included the worm hole in this apple because the best apples came from our back yard on Arlington Road – pesticide free with blemishes and all.

I used the new Blueprints 2 Die-namic set to create the base and strips from Nightshift Blue cardstock, and to make the little tag.

I took the sentiment, “sweet,” from the new Birthday Sentiments stamp set.

Sweet Apple Card Side

You can peek inside the apple when you angle this card to the side. I did some hand stitching to the leaves and inside of the apple, and, to bring out the sugary sweet flavor of the apple, I added some Distress Stickles to the edge. Yummy.

Green Granny Smith apples make the best pies, and oh, I love apple pie, so . . . I made a green apple.

3D Green Apple

I just cut the seeds by hand, used a stick from my yard for the apple core, and embellished the apple with a Kraft Button and hemp cord. I sponged some bottom of the apple with Sour Apple ink and the edges of the leaves with Kraft ink.

[Edited to add on 04/15/13 – Because of your very sweet comments, I wrote a tutorial to create this half/sliced apple and a whole apple. You can find it here: More Apple Orchards and a Tutorial.]

If you weren’t craving caramel apples before, you will now . . .

Paper Caramel Apple

The Wonky Scallop Die-namics makes a great, drippy caramel edge. I added Distress Stickles for sugary goodness.

To make this a fun treat, I added individual sized caramel dip behind the card wrapped in cellophane.

When you unwrap the cellophane and open the card, here’s the inside.

Caramel Apple Inside

I call this my Sweet Apple Trio.

Tips & Techniques

Shew – that was a orchard full, wasn’t it. I hope you enjoyed all these projects as much as I enjoyed making them. If you’d like more detailed instructions on any of the projects, just let me know in a comment below.

Meanwhile, here’s just a simple tip. If you lay a rectangle cut from the Blueprints 1 set (4″ by 5.25″) on top of the largest rectangle cut from the Blueprints 2 set (4.125″ by 5.357″), you can get this lovely 1/16″ layer for your card front. I used those for this card.

Pretty Poppies

That we find a crystal or a poppy beautiful
means that we are less alone,
that we are more deeply inserted into existence
than the course of a single life would lead us to believe.

MFT Pretty Poppies Blossom

Welcome everyone. I'm so excited. Today is Day #1 of the My Favorite Things Teaser Time – a week-long party revealing the newest products. And, holy smokes. You're in for some big treats, starting with this gorgeous set designed by Lisa Johnson, Pretty Poppies, and the new Blueprints Die-namics.

I did the research, really I did. I know poppies are traditionally red. Gorgeous, luscious red.

But, there really are pink poppies, too.

My Favorite Things Pretty Poppies

While I was making these two cards, I had visions of Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, and Toto, prancing through the poppy field. Poppies are such beautiful, mystical, and magical flowers.

Here's the inside of this card.

Thinking of You

This week we're revealing Blueprint #1. (Yes! There will be more!) Each set of Blueprint Die-namics includes building-block shapes but, and this is so crazy exciting, they also include design plans. You can follow any of the four sketches provided with Blueprint #1, or mix and match the elements to be your own architect. Just watch the MFT blog this week for more details and sneaky peaks of the design plans.

This Pretty Poppies set is so gorgeous, and the Blueprint design plan made assembling this card so easy, well, I just couldn't stop. I made a second card.

Aren't the fonts freakin' gorgeous with this set? Here's the very simple inside of my second card.

Well, you know why they call this week Teaser Time, right? Because, as gorgeous and fun as these new products are, you can't buy them just yet. The My Favorite Things (MFT) release, including all new stamp sets and Die-namics, is on March 11 at 10:00 PM EST.  You'll find all the newest products HERE at release time.

Here are the sets we're revealing today. If you'd like to see all of the teasers just click on over to the MFT Blog. Be sure to leave comments as you visit the designers for the chance to win $10.00 gift certificates given away daily.

Finished size of both cards is 4-1/4" by 5-1/2".  The pattern paper is from Heidi Swapp's Vintage Chic 8" x 8" Paper Pack. I added a little Ranger Tim Holtz Distress Stickles (Rock Candy) to the blossoms.

MFT Embrellished Eggs Cupcakes

What do you get when you cross S'mores with Marshmallow Peeps?

Peeps S'mores Basket

Let me just say – it wasn't easy finding fresh Marshmallow Peeps in early February. But, I searched the globe (or at least every candy source in town).

Easter Smeeps Basket

The new Trapezoid Treat Box and Woven Basket Die-namics are the perfect size to hold a Peeps S'mores kit.

To make and eat these S'meeps . . .

  • Place two squares of chocolate on one half of a graham cracker.
  • Top with one Peep chick or two Peep bunnies.
  • Place in the microwave and cook on high for 10 seconds. Rest for a few seconds to make sure the Peep doesn’t explode. Continue to cook in 10-second intervals until soft.
  • Place the other half of the graham cracker on top and let it sit for at least 30 seconds to let the chocolate melt.

Smash down and enjoy!

Cupcakes anyone?

 Easter Cupcake Topper

I used the Easter Elements Die-namics and Lisa Johnson's new stamp set, Embellished Eggs, to make cupcake toppers, with a little help from Wilton's Lollipop Sticks.

Cake Balls Toppers

Turns out, this makes a pretty cute topper for some cake balls, too.

Tips & Techniques

This Woven Basket Die-namic has very sweet and soft basket-weave embossing. To bring it out a bit I sponged on some chalk ink. You can even use the basket-weave embossing from this Die-namic to emboss something small, like the tag on the basket.
